The wild Montana mountains are no place for an aging widow to live alone with dementia. And when Cathleen Donaghue discovers the poor woman's condition, there's no way she'll walk away without helping. After all, she left her comfortable Boston home to help her brothers with their mining town medical practice because she wanted to make a difference. But the wild elements she encounters on this mission of mercy are nothing like she expected, especially the widow's mountain-man son who shows up out of the blue.

Trapper Reuben Scott planned only a quick visit to his parents' homestead to check on them and tan his winter hides, but the strange woman standing at his mother's stove is a shock. And then she tells him his father has died and his mother is losing her mind. The sad news may bring an end to the life he's loved - trapping, living in the wild freedom of these mountains, working closely with the Indians - no one demanding he measure up. But he'll do anything for his family, what little he has left, that is. Even deal with the city woman who seems to connect with his confused mother.

When tragedy strikes Cathleen's family, she's forced to choose between duty and the people who need her most. And the wrong decision could quickly lead to disaster. As the danger spirals out of her control, this impassive mountain man may be the only one with the skills to save her. But can she trust him with her heart, too?

The Lady and the Mountain Call Mountain Dreams Series Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Misty M Beller Lisa Kelly Inc Misty M Beller Books Books

Cathleen goes to the mountains to help a woman with dementia; though it's hard work and not what she's used to, she falls in love with life in the mountains, especially when the woman's son, Reuben, returns to help, as well.

Best bits: Cathleen loves to be useful, and when she is less needed as an aunt than she hoped, the opportunity to nurse Mrs. Scott is appealing for that aspect, regardless of her lack of experience with rural life. To everyone's surprise, she soon found she preferred mountain living to anything else. Mrs. Scott is a handful, though, and Cathleen shows her vulnerability most when things end up out of her control, especially when someone else ends up hurt in the process. Reuben is a tough mountain man, strong and capable, but also a talented artist, turning the furs and skins he cures into amazing works of art. He always felt like he never quite measured up, as his parents were more capable of homesteading than he ever was, and he wonders if his parents wouldn't rather his twin sister Nora lived instead of him. It doesn't seem like his parents ever put him down, but his own differences from them made him feel somehow less. This contributes to him feeling unworthy of Cathleen, and unworthy of God's attention. Cathleen models praying for guidance and then following God's will (the direction where she feels complete peace). Reuben resists relying on God, feeling he has never come across a situation where it wasn't just as easy to do it himself, until faced with the life-or-death challenge of bringing the woman he loves to safety. The month was given at the epilogue, not just the start, which was great.

Issues: Typos (eg, tint for tiny, this for his) and homophone issues (eg, whit for wit, break for brake), especially near the end, it seemed. There was a bit where they were talking about Alex's trip east where they said they'd have to wait until the end of March or even April, and made it seem that was far away, when in fact it had to be at least the end of March by then, if not early April. Other than that one scene, time was fairly well conveyed and consistent. Britt's death is said to be when she was 8 in this book; add that to 7 in one and 10 in another--not consistent at all.

The Lady and the Mountain Call Mountain Dreams Series Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Misty M Beller Lisa Kelly Inc Misty M Beller Books Books Reviews

This story was so good I had a hard time putting it down. The characters were all charming, patient and giving so much. Living on top by the mountains was unbelievable. This is a very short version I know but take my word for it please excellent book. Thank you Misty M. Beller.
I enjoyed the entire Mountain Dreams series. I highly recommend reading them all. This one was my favorite. Cathleen is a strong woman and Reuben needs her far more than he will admit and this love story has lots of struggles along the way but you will fall in love with them. Misty Beller puts you on the mountains with these characters and you feel their love and pain. Highly recommend reading this book and the entire series. Great christian reads.
The people in this lovely book seem so real they could step off the pages! I enjoyed Cathleen as she adapted to a life in a cabin high in the mountains since she was raised in a city on the East Coast. I identified with her stubborn fortitude to achieve what she felt was a calling from God, moving forward even though her brothers had a hard time not "protecting" her as they thought they should. We watched Rueben grow as a man of God to realize God had a plan for him and that he was a lot more capable than he gave himself credit for. I also identified with their struggle to understand and learn to live with the dementia that was destroying Rueben's mother's mind. Our family has walked that heartbreaking path with my father and his mother my grandmother.
Glad to see Misty went back to developing the characters in this one. I enjoyed all the books in this series except for the 4th one. The rest of them have strong characters. I especially like how their work and their calls, as well as their personalities, lead them to each other as couples. (Like I said, all books except #4. I wrote a review on that one too.
She writes fun books. Easy reads for a day at the beach.
I have loved all five books in this series. Faith, adventure, excitement, joy, loss, heart ache and true love all rolled up in this series. Each different from the first. Please take the time to read each one you won't be sorry you did. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Now on to the next in Misty M. Bellers series, Heart of The Mountain. As I start on this next book I realize this series should be read first. I am sure I will still enjoy each book in the Heart of the Mountain.
Misty Beller is becoming one of my favorite authors. This is the last of this series that I am aware of and as good as all the previous volumes of this series were. This one was my favorite. I really liked all of the characters in this book; especially the main characters Reuben and Cathleen and of course Reuben's mother Reuben's Mother. I like reading series like this one because all of the characters in the previous books are included which enriches each volume. I have other books by this author that I intend to read. I am looking forward to them.
This has been such an interesting series for me and this book especially so as it deals with dementia. My mother had alzheimer's and my mother-in-law is suffering with dementia so this hits close to home. It's amazing to read how Cathleen took care of a woman, a stranger to her, with this disease back in a time when they didn't know as much as they do today as far as complications, treatments and ways to care for people with this problem. Again, I highly recommend this book, as well as the whole series, to readers that enjoy historical fiction. Misty as done wonderful work with these stories.
